The Heart of Despair

A picture I've been working on over the last few days after a massive wave of inspiration which I can't quite remember the cause of. Halfway through this picture, I realised just how deeply disturbed I am. I finished it anyway.

This is the God of Death and Despair. The realm he lives in is the one where nightmares happen, even though he doesn't really visit home much - being Death is a pretty much full-time job. So, to govern the nightmares of sleeping minds, he left his left-hand-man in command (he's left-handed). But this guy was pretty psycho, which is why nightmares, despite being horrifically scary, are usually pretty stupid (e.g. being chased by a giant octopus in a pink bow-tie, getting eaten alive by a swarm of angry avocado people, and etc. Yes, I have had both these nightmares, these are the kind that REALLY stay with you).

Since Death is also Despair, everywhere he goes people have a feeling of dread, even though they usually can't see him. If it's any help, he can't see them either (because he's blind - just in case someone didn't notice the blindfold and blood). The words on top is his own little catchphrase. The catchphrase was inspired by a Terry Pratchett quote from the novel Strata, which went "a second of vertigo, and eternity of despair."
